POS for Hairdressers: How to Choose the Salon Terminal
A hairdressing salon has specific needs for collecting payments: minute-by-minute appointments, regular clients, home services. Since 30 June 2022 the POS terminal is also mandatory for hairdressers (art. 15(4) of Italian Decree-Law 179/2012), with a sanction of 30 euros plus 4% on the refused transaction.

Why the salon needs a dedicated POS
A hairdressing salon is a retail service business: clients arrive with an appointment and pay at the end of the service. The duty to accept electronic payments also applies to hairdressers since 30 June 2014, and since 30 June 2022 refusing an electronic payment is sanctioned with 30 euros plus 4% of the transaction value, without remission (as described in the guide on the [mandatory POS](/en/resources/payment-gateway-for-smes-guide)).
The salon workflow has one peculiarity: payment comes after the service. That requires a quick terminal between client and client, one that also works away from home (cuts at the client's home, events) and coexists with the booking software. The guide to the [POS for bars](/en/resources/payment-gateway-for-smes-guide) shows the same selection scheme for a fast-paced venue.
In addition, salon revenues are certified with the electronic cash register and, from 1 January 2026, the terminal must be linked to the cash register, as described in the guide on the [POS-to-telematic-cash-register link](/en/resources/payment-gateway-for-smes-guide).
The features a salon needs
The features that matter in the choice for a hairdresser:
- Contactless and wallets: the client taps card or phone between service and service, with no queues at the till.
- Portability: a terminal with a long-lasting battery for home cuts and events; the guide to [POS Android terminals](/en/resources/android-pos-terminal) compares the formats.
- No monthly fee: in salons with an average ticket of 20-40 euros, a monthly fee eats into the margin; the RoxPay POS Smart has no fixed monthly cost.
- Regular clients: for recurring clients with packages or subscriptions, SEPA direct debit with a mandate avoids the risk of an expired card, as described in the guide on [recurring payments](/en/resources/sepa-direct-debit-recurring-payments).
Costs for a salon
The cost of electronic collection for a salon is the commission per transaction. With blended tariffs (1.4%-1.95%) the cost is opaque; with RoxPay's IC++ pricing (0,15 € + 0,35-0,85%) every component is declared: regulated interchange (0.2% debit, 0.3% consumer credit, EU Regulation 2015/751), scheme fee and margin.
In a salon taking 6,000 euros a month in electronic payments, the difference between an opaque 1.95% tariff and IC++ pricing adds up to tens of euros per month, as the simulations in the guide on [how much a POS costs](/en/resources/payment-gateway-fees-comparison) show. On top of that comes the 30% tax credit on commissions (art. 22 of Decree-Law 124/2019, tax code 6916, RU section), described in the [POS tax credit guide](/en/resources/pos-tax-credit-2026).
Salon management software (bookings, clients, products) stays separate from the POS: the terminal must connect to the manager without depending on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a POS terminal mandatory for hairdressers?
Yes. The duty to accept electronic payments applies to anyone selling goods or providing services, hairdressers included (art. 15(4) of Decree-Law 179/2012, in force since 30 June 2014). Since 30 June 2022 refusing an electronic payment carries a sanction of 30 euros plus 4% of the transaction value.
How much does a POS for a hair salon cost?
It depends on the provider: many apply monthly fees of 10-30 euros per terminal. RoxPay activates the POS Smart with no fixed monthly cost, with IC++ pricing (0,15 € + 0.35-0.85%) per transaction and activation with a VAT number in 24 hours.
Must the salon terminal issue the sales receipt?
The salon is a retail business, so it issues the commercial document through an electronic cash register. From 1 January 2026 the terminal must be linked administratively to the cash register and the amount collected by card must match the transmitted revenue.
Are instalment plans worthwhile in a salon?
The BNPL channel is designed for medium-high tickets: in a salon the average sale is low and the instalment commission weighs more than the benefit. For packages and subscriptions of regular clients, the right lever is SEPA direct debit with a mandate.
Does RoxPay issue cards or open accounts for the salon?
No. RoxPay is a payment gateway with POS: it is not a bank, it does not issue cards and it does not open bank accounts. Salon takings arrive within 48 hours in the company's existing business account.
